shy dogs

Post  huntachad on Mon Jun 01, 2009 8:35 pm

Question - Anybody out there get shy dogs that they hunting with? When I mean "shy" I am referring to dogs that just don't want to come to you know matter what you do. I have a brother and sister that I want to really start hunting. They are 10 months old right now. The brother is starting to learn how to back track pretty good right now. He grabs solid!! So far since the light switch in his head turned on, he has been on the past five pigs. The sister on the other hand has not realy made it in the mountain yet. She has been on only three hunts so far, but always been on the rope. Even then, its as if I am playing tug of war with her. I have a fenced in yard at home and always let my pack socialize for at least an hour. But when it comes to putting them back in, I find my self playing duck duck goose around my own kennels just to get her in. By then, I am yelling and chasing her around with the guava stick. Who would want to come to an insane owner?? I definetly don't want to be doing that scenario in the mountain. Anybody got any suggetions?

If the dog means that much to you then i suggest spending alot of time one on one with the dog and as time goes on slowly slip the rope on but it will take alot of time and patience as for me I ended up getting rid of mine only cause I dont have patience especialy when the hunt is over and the dog is hard to catch ,one on one will go a long way, good luck Huntaz only Brad

Thanks for the input guys. Brad, Seanboy told me the same thing. Believe you me, I have been giving this dog alot of "one and one" time. I see alot of potential in this pup. I am doing everthing in my power to give this dog "special treatment". Steak, dog snacks, chicken, vienna sausage, etc have all been given and is still being given. I do have alot of patience with dogs, so hopefully one day it will all pay off. Thanks again guys...Chad

Thanks Chris. Yeah almost all my dogs are one man dogs. Only my bulls for some reason are friendly - they will go to anybody. I hunt my friend's dogs all the time with my pack with or without him and they would rather come to me than their own master (ha ha ha). But I know only time and patience will bring this particular pup out of her shell. And I have both.....Alohaz - Chad
