Polipoli Volunteer Trail Work Day This Saturday

Post  Misadventure Gear on Tue Jun 26, 2012 10:55 am

Those of you on Maui have probably heard that while the Kula Forest Reserve and Polipoli State Park are open, all trails remain closed after the severe windstorm on Fathers Day. In some areas 50+mph winds were recorded. Today, I had the opportunity to hike Mamane Trail (one of the most heavily damaged trails) with a members of the Na Ala Hele trail crew to assess the damage. I can only describe it as Tree-magedon. The upper part of the trail which goes through the grassland is fine, however, on entering the forest, the trail is heavily damaged. I counted about 50 separate blockages in the lower mile of trail and there are well over 100 trees that will need to be chainsawed. We will also need to reroute the trail in a handful of places due to severe damage and root balls tearing out the trail. In some areas, every tree in a 50 yard circle was blown down and smashed to pieces.

To speed the reopening of the trail, Na Ala Hele will have a Volunteer Trailwork Day this Saturday, June 30, to work on a few of the reroutes. We are asking volunteers to meet at the Kahului Forestry Baseyard at 7am, or Rice Park in Kula at 8am, and we plan to work until approx. 1pm. Please RSVP with me so we can make sure everyone has transportation to the trailhead. Tools will be provided. All volunteers are encouraged to bring lunch, water, sunscreen, hat, work gloves, and a jacket. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Mahalo for your kokua in reopening our trails.

Unfortunately, the Na Ala Hele trail crew has been assisting with a brush fire in Kauai this week and are still there. We will have to postpone.

From the information that i had gathered no hunting/gathering allowed on this trail correct?

Section 7. The State reaffirms and shall protect all rights, customarily and traditionally exercised for subsistence, cultural and religious purposes and possessed by ahupua'a tenants who are descendants of native Hawaiians who inhabited the Hawaiian Islands prior to 1778, subject to the right of the State to regulate such rights. Mamane Trail traverses through Hunting Unit C. To my knowledge, the trail does not have a designated safety zone along its coridor, nor does the lower portion of the Upper Waiolhuli Trail which the bottom of Mamane Trail ties into. Both trails are used by hunters to access their hunting grounds. Waipoli Road does have a designated safety zone 50 yards wide along either side of it.

Obviously, if you decide to hunt close to the trail, please take reasonable precautions and be aware of other users such as hikers and mountain bikers on the trail.

According to the press release of 6/21/12, "The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) yesterday reopened the Kula Forest Reserve, Waipoli Road and Polipoli Spring State Park after the forest reserve access road was cleared of fallen trees.

Although the road is passable and is open to the public, the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW)
noted that all trails in the Kula Forest Reserve and Polipoli State Park will remain closed until further
notice due to safety concerns involving fallen trees and debris."

The Forest Reserve and hunting areas (Units C and E) are open. However, several hiking trails, including Mamane and Upper Waiohuli, are temporarily closed for safety reasons. As crews clear each trail, it will reopen. Unfortunately, key members of the trail crew have been in Kauai, assisting with the Hikimoe Ridge Forest Fire, and this has slowed clearing of the trails. We are hoping they will return soon, and can get up to Polipoli with chainsaws. On Saturday, I hunted Unit C, and it took me almost an hour longer than normal to reach my spot because of fallen trees.

We are planning to reschedule the volunteer trailwork day for Saturday, July 14.

Trail Work Day this Saturday, 7-14-12

Post  Misadventure Gear on Mon Jul 09, 2012 11:32 pm

I have just confirmed with the Na Ala Hele Trail Crew that we will have a volunteer work day this Saturday, 7/14/12. The crew is back from the fire on Kauai, and anticipate having both Mamane and Upper Waiohuli cleared by this weekend. We will be going in to complete repairs and minor re-routes of a couple of sections.
