Post  HYPA Tue Mar 11, 2014 6:08 pm

Hb1902 will be heard this Monday March 17th at the state Capitol room 225 at 1:15 p.m. This bill requires the state to replace hunting areas that have been taking away do to fencinh this is particularly important to the island of Oahu because of the lack of hunting areas already I encourage everybody who has the time to show up and give testimony .
If you can't then send it in via the web at Hawaii. gov.

I know that we have to work but I also see a lot of hunters hunting on work days and I know  hunters that don't work and it is a small price to pay to sit in traffic to get our voices heard

last night I saw a legislation drill Aila about the lack of cooperation towards hunters I have not seen this in a long time I do believe that they are starting to get the big picture and to let up now would be senseless

Mahalo for sharing the info, HYPA.

Here is part of an email that I was asked to post.

Date: March 10, 2014, 3:40:30 PM HST
To: undisclosed-recipients:;
Subject: HB1902 HD2

Aloha gang,

HB1902 will be heard in the senate on Monday March 17, 2014. We need to continue our efforts to move this bill through committee. If we can get HB1902 out of
WTL we have a good chance to amend some of the language in our favor.

We need people to fly over to the capitol for testimony, so I am asking for your help.

Also need those to submit online testimony. I checked the website and we can already start submitting testimony in support. Please get your family, friends and clubs
together and submit testimony online. If you need help please email me, I can set you up real easy.

S The committee(s) on WTL has scheduled a public hearing on 03-17-14 1:15PM in conference room 225.

if anyone is passing through kalihi area enroute to the capitol and got room for one more dog (me) let me know. message me./mahalo'z.  not sure if you are flying in again for this one braddah Joe, but mahalo for swinging by to pick me up the last time with braddah Makani.  e kala mai regarding the video i took of the testimonies that you, Esther, Munsta and others gave.  i have the data disk from my putt-putt little camera if anyone wants to take a stab at trying to open the files.  something about "codec" that i can't fricken figure out.  yup, Esther's comments were bold and admirable considering her work in the belly of the beast.  she is all bite and no bark and in our hunt for a better world for ourselves, that's a real good thing.

Right on braddas mahalo nui for getting involved. Really appreciate your presence at the hearing!

I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A BIG MAHALO TO THE OUTER ISLAND HUNTAZ THAT FLEW OVER FOR HEARINGS LAST TIME.

I do understand a lot of huntaz work and cant be there to give testimony. If so, please let me know its easy to do online if you can check your email you can submit testimony its that easy. If you dont work, are retired, semi-retired etc and can make it it would be great to give testimony. I really cant emphasize enough how important bills like these are for the NEXT GENERATION(S) OF HUNTAZ!!! The way I look at it you either going be part of the solution or part of the problem.

Another thing I would like to encourage is the IMPORTANCE of Hunting License purchase. In several meetings recently the amount of huntaz registered/licensed inThe state is roughly 11,000. We know that this is not an accurate number at all and accounts for less than probly 1% of the population. So now you can see how its a numbers game. Another HURTING US as huntaz is failure to report take. What that means is if you go hunt and catch something but didnt report it its actually HURTING US BIGTIME in the legislature.

I will give you a scenario...say you and others hunting an area an catching steady but dont report it. The state will say according to the catch reports only one (1) pig was caught in this area in the last six (6) months etc. So when the legislature looks at that it actually works against us.

Just wanted to put that out there and keep accurate hunting journals of your catch hunts etc like I do. They have been asking how much does wild game supplement our normal diets. These questions have been asked repeatedly by the legislature. We need to be able to tell them so it shows THE REAL ACTUAL NUMBERS OF GAME HARVESTED!!

Mahalo nui for swinging by to help get my okole down to stand in support of HB 1902, HYPA. I really appreciate it a lot.  And mahalo for making the airport run so Joe could get his plane back to the Big Island after the hearing.

I thought today's  hearing went well in spite of a low turn out of hunters and again it seemed that there were more folks from the Big Island than there were from O'ahu.  I'm sure we have some folks that would have loved to come and take a stand on the bill but have commitments like work, family and smoking some buds....haha.  All joking aside, today, I got to witness some DEAD SERIOUS questions from Chairperson Senator Malama Solomon addressed towards DLNR's William Aila.  Why have hunters been, for the last 20 years, waiting around, hoping to be taken seriously by the State and the DLNR??? What, when, why and how come????  As much as I am concerned about these things, numbers and details are beyond me and it was good hearing HYPA talk about Poamoho lands that were lost, about the lack of real outreach on the part of DLNR and other important things. Braddah Joe connected the dots, linking several entities that have set themselves up as stakeholders in this land use/land grab issue.  I tried to document as much of our testimonies as the phone's (Makani's) batteries allowed.  I'm not a news reporter but I think if you are interested you should have a chance to hear what went on.  I'm not sure how today's video will turn out but I was really impressed with the strength of the testimonies, including that of braddah Muns, who arrived seconds before Senator Malama Solomon concluded the HB 1902 portion of the day's agenda.  As always, I felt moved by Muns' testimony.  If I am not mistaken, he was the only Kanaka Maoli to give testimony, one that spoke of his support of HB 1902, after working many years in the field, helping to save endangered species and putting up fences as part of his job.

Credit should be given to others like Tony Sylvester and his wife for their testimony and for their involvement with the bill and their suggestions for forthcoming amendments.  Legal speak has often been the language of thieves and slippery tongued profiteers and as HYPA astutely pointed out "language" needs to be changed, because in its present incarnation, the bill provides loopholds that the DLNR can use to further escape having to fulfill their responsibilities in a transparent manner.

Mahalo to fishermen like braddah Makani who again gave excellent testimony and stood in solidarity with us on HB 1902.  Mahalo for again providing transportation to the event.  Molokai's Lori Buchanan had comments and suggestions and helped to add another dimension to our collective voices.
My own testimony was short and brief, primarily urging that our concerns be taken into real consideration and imploring that the right thing should be done, that which is PONO.

Much respect to the Big Island's Senator Malama Solomon who chaired the proceeding.  She expressed her knowledge of the urgency and frustration that hunters in Hawaii have felt about feeling left out in the dark on many of the decisions and actions that DLNR have done up to this very day, and sought answers from DLNR's William Aila as to what can and what will be done to ensure that the State and its DLNR begins to forge a better relationship with its citizens who hunt and pay their way into the mountain with the purchase of hunting licenses etc.  As hunters we know we deserve better than the run arounds we have been getting, and it was good to know that Solomon seemed to be of the mind of "Enough is Enough!!!"

There were other people like Nani from Puna who paid her own way to Honolulu to testify in favor of HB 1902.  She gave excellent testimony urging support of the bill.

As disappointed as I feel about the small turnout of hunters from O'ahu, I still would like to encourage and urge everyone out there to consider looking into
whats going on.  Its not easy for anyone to have to fly to O'ahu when they have to pay their own way.  To braddah Cal from Whitmore, much mahalo for coming all the way into town to give your testimony.  Mahalo for your support!

Mahalo to HYPA and Muns for forwarding me the pixs.  And mahalo to everyone who supported HB 1902!!!
