Update on proposed changes to hunting rules ...finally

Post  Nic Barca on Tue Oct 07, 2014 6:38 am

It seems like those hunting rule changes that were proposed three or four years ago are finally making their way through the administrative process.  It was pretty interesting to read DOFAW's responses to people's comments.  Sort of gives you an inside look into how it all works. ...or doesn't work, depending on how you look at it.  I for one am quite happy with the proposed rules for Kauai and it's been a long time coming! Hopefully it only takes a few more years.  Wink

October 1, 2014 email:
-------------------------
Good afternoon,

You are receiving this email because you attended a public hearing and provided an email address to be notified on the proposed changes to Hawaii Administrative Rules Chapters 122 and 123 covering hunting of game birds and game mammals in the state. We are targeting the October 24, 2014 Board of Land and Natural Resources meeting to seek approval of these changes. We are making the Board submittal attachments available online early, so that everyone has a chance to review before the Board meeting. A public hard copy of the proposed changes will also be available at each DOFAW branch office for review there within the next day or two. We will not be making personal copies at the offices for people to take home, so if you would like a personal copy, please print it out from the online access. DOFAW staff will not be responding to any more comments directly, so please submit written testimony prior to the Board meeting and/or attend the meeting in person to provide oral testimony. The proposed rules can be downloaded at:

http://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dofaw/rules/draft-rules/
Anyone wishing to provide comments/testimony on these proposed rules may do so by following these instructions:

Written testimony may be submitted in one of the following ways:

Fax: (808) 587-0390  Attn: Board Members
Email: kuulei.n.moses@hawaii.gov
Written testimony must be received in advance of the October 24th, 2014 board meeting for board members’ consideration prior to decision-making. If possible, please submit written testimony after October 17th, 2014 to ensure it is received in the time period for this particular meeting.
Oral testimony may be presented on the day of the Land Board meeting.  If possible, please provide a written summary of your testimony to the board when approaching the board to present oral testimony.

Thank you

John P. Vetter

So feel free to comment either way, good or bad.  I don't think the comments really matter in terms of changing anything at this point but maybe you could sway a board member.  I even threw in a poll:

In general, more open hunting days, Unit H and the E have bag limits of two animals per day of any combo goat, pig, and deer year round.
The Alakai is split into two units, a remote unit open 365 days a year and a less remote unit open weekends (or rather friday to monday). Also changed the border of Unit E and B. And a bunch of small kine changes...

Thanks. Wow, Unit H and E have year round deer? I wonder if you need special tags for that or just sign in and out at the check in stations and thats it.

Looks like an annual permit required. Can't really tell if it's gonna be like unit G where you gotta go get a permit prior to trip or just check in at the checkin box.
