I kinda had that rep for along time till my son got old enough, The dogs hunt better when you are by yourself ...they know they are there to work and they arent gonna get any prasing till they do there job.
The down side to hunting by yourself is of course safety..here is something that happened to me in the mountain 12 years ago,I was getting ready to check a pocket early one morning b4 the sun came up and just so happened this day i decided to bring my brand new pistol I was so stoked about the gun that I didnt get new batteries for my light, lol as the dogs were running into the pocket I had to keep turning the light on and off just so i could see the trail. The dogs ended up hitting a boar and the boar was running out of the pocket right to me,just as I turned off the light and turned it back on it was right in front of me about three feet, full charge. Now i had the pistol out and at the ready so when i turned the light on the boar was already at my feet I took a shot BOOM the pistol went off then boar picked me up of the ground threw me to the left and as I landed the pistol was under my belly and my finger was still on the trigger....BOOM a second shot went of under my torsoe. The heat from the flash dried up a spot on my wet shirt and burned a spot on my belly...(good thing i had a belly because that is what made the barrel point to the ground and not into my family jewels.

I could feel the boar shuffling my feet but i didnt care because I though i had shot my self in the gut...turns out the bullet severd his spine and he was trying to get up from under my right leg to run away but he didnt have control of his back legs.at the same time dogs were raching him and starting to grab his head. wile the dogs were screaming the boar All i could do is think of my family and how they were not gonna know what happened they didnt even know were i was hunting I thought i was gonna bleed to death,

The bullet never hit me it went straight into the ground and the most damage i got was a cut from the boar on my shin and a perfect round burn mark right above me bellybutton. After everything was done a tried to call my wife to let her know were i was .....not tell her what happened just to let her know were I was,,,,,Turned out THE PHONE BATTERY WASNT CHARGED!!!I just wanted to go home after that

this is the boar he was only 105 lbs and only had 1 1/2 in hooks but till this day I will never forget this hunt!

HYPA, dat's one nuts sotry........

I hunt alone quite a bit myself--bowhunting high elevation and remote terrain on Haleakala. I also have a blown out knee that folds sideways if I'm not careful. My wife worries a lot, but not going out is not an option for me. I ALWAYS make sure I'm prepared to to spend a nite if I have to, with a space blanket, extra poncho, jacket, knit hat, mini surivival kit and full first aid kit, a GPS, plus extra food or powerbars. I also make sure my wife knows where I'll be (with a map), carry a fully charged cell phone and check in a few times a day. I also have an agreement with a few friends of mine. If I call for an evac, they will come, if they call--I'll come. Last thing I want to do is call for a helicopter. I've never needed it, but I'm glad I have all that stuff. Once, years ago, I even went out for a full day hunt, and then stayed overnite to simulate geting stranded. That is when I truely learned the value of a space blanket and poncho. My jacket alone didn't cut it at 8000' in January. Now I know that, while I may not be comfortable, I don't have to worry about hypothermia as much.

My girl worries about me falling off a cliff, and not being able to call for help. Not much I can do about that but she appreciates that I am careful AND prepared.

Alohaz guys.

That is one story HYPA! Whew!! The guardian angel had to have gotten stripes for that one. I'm glad that it's you telling us the story. Very Happy

I hunt alone often and at times I find myself prefering it. (hope none of my buddies are reading this LOL!)
I favor it when its time to get down and serious especially when training pups. I like to see the young ones, without the added distractions of someone elses dogs habits or lack thereof or having to conflict to some degree with the other hunters ways of training. Just me with somewhat more control of the hunting tempo, enviornment, meaning no other external distractions, backtrack training, temperment assesment and focused physical conditioning.
I also hunt alone on bowhunts and high power rifle hunts. I have found that I harvest more of my trophy animals this way. Why? probably it's a different state of mind. Normally for me, I find that when I am with someone the role of guide emerges and that I am there to help the other with a successful, safe harvest. Don't get me wrong I am not complaining. If the other guy harvests an animal with me, I am truly happy and satisfied in every way about that particular day. For boarhunts with buddies I find it's a very social type hunt with alot of laughing and joking around. Catch, no catch "good fun kine". Normally when my younger ones are firing well and have a "locked in" mode of operation, I'll start going with other guys with less worries that my dog will form some learned bad habits from someone elses dogs.
I personally like hunting alone. I am in no way condoning or condemning it. I think it helps with your overall woodsmanship, the development of your self confidence which in turn plays a huge role in your ability to remain calm and collected in certain situations which ultimately turns out to be the number one reason for survival in a sticky scenario. Before the advent of cell phones, gps etc our choices were limited. It wasn't a problem back then though so it shouldn't be now. Hell I think the truck ride to the mountains has more inherint dangers in it than the hunt itself.
Having said all of that I couldn't agree more with MauiRhinos seven P's statement.
If the unexpected is expected, then unexpectedness no longer has a grip.
ALOHAZ and have a "safe" holiday season. Very Happy

I hunt on my own from time to time. Like Maukakane I prefer it sometimes. I did have a close call a few years back though while on the mainland. I fell asleep in my treestand and fell out (no harness). I must have did a somersault in mid air cause I landed flat on my back and all I remember is looking at the sky thinking okay I am gonna die I hope my daughter will know how much I love her before I blacked out. I woke up a while later in a lot of pain and a bit foggy. I somehow made it back to the truck and back home. All I can say is NEVER AGAIN! That was so STUPID! Now I use a Harness 100% of the time and someone knows at least the general area I am at.

A whistle would be a good thing to carry with you in case you don't have cell. That way if someones looking for you, you can blow that so they can hear.

Mauka and Maui you all hit the nail on the head you got to be prepaired..that being said an accident is an accident something your not prepaired for. I too still hunt by myself now and then and you are right mauka the dogs learn alot faster when its just you. Other dogs fom other hunters may not have the qualities you are trying to instill into your own pack....and when pups are involved, that is the time you need to pay more attention to em...therefor hunting alone is best.....but always for god sake let someone know were you are..at least.

I also bielieve that having your wife call your freinds b4 the rescue is a good practice only because your buds know your trail habbits and like maui said nothing more embarassing than having a chopper called on you for no reason.....then again it does make for interesting beer talk ...lol Very Happy

I am at the point were I am almost ready to hand the pack over to my son he has the drive and the look of a porkerea just like his ol man..lol 10 -15 years ago..right now i have little girls that I have to teach that boy are bad..lol

But when he goes out hell always have me or someone with him untill hes competent in himself and able to handle his own .
