Origins
Some of the earliest known hog hunting took place in ancient Greece, where the hunting season began promptly each September. Homer referred to boar hunting in The Odyssey, written in 700 B.C. The Greek mythologist tells of a city built on the foundations of a boar-hunting site.
Early days
In Medieval Europe, hog hunting was seen as a skillful activity much more than as a necessity or mundane activity. In fact, noblemen were the main participants in the sport, and created the tradition of finishing a hunt by stabbing the boar with a dagger.
Features
Across cultures and eras, hog hunting was frequently seen as a test of courage and skill. To make this pastime even more challenging, some Medieval European hunters would begin their hog hunts during mating season, when the animals were most hostile. Indeed, Europeans recognized the potential danger and courage involved in wild hog hunting. Prominent hog hunter King Philip IV of France died during a hunt after a boar charged his horse.

During the Victorian era, British military officers and Indian high kings called Maharajas practiced a form of hog hunting known as pig-sticking. This type of hunt involved shooting hogs while on horseback, and as in centuries before, was seen as a show of skill and bravery[code][b]

A little history Empty Jesus was a hog hunter

Post  CAVE CANEM Thu Mar 04, 2010 7:35 pm

Mark Chapter 5:

My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

Who's packin?? Laughing

A little history Empty History repeats itself.

Hog428,

Right on, nicely written piece of history. Reserved primarily for kings and nobility the world over. Mainly because the king owned the best hunting lands and anyone else caught poaching were severely punished or killed. Sound familiar? LOL. Sad The lands that commoners could harvest game from did not have the game holding capacity as the more fertile and abundant royal grounds. Sound familiar? LOL. Sad The game would also move out of the area not only because of poor habitat/food sources etc but also from higher hunting pressures from the poorer countrymen/women that depended on the harvest as a source of nourishment. Sound familiar? Sad

Alot has changed since then though and now,we the poor countrymen/women are able to hunt areas that are great, fairly good, just good and sometimes miserable but hey, we can. (knock on wood!) LOL. Very Happy Places on the mainland and certain places even here in Hawaii, wild pigs are moving into habitats where you wouldn't normally have found them before. Soon you could find them in all 50 states (if things go well) LOL! Very Happy

One truth of nature states that "only the strongest survive" not only physically but more importantly mentally, the ability to adapt. The smarter, faster ones produce future offspring. This in turn creates hounds and hunters that are able to adapt equally with the boar. This is another naturally occuring phenomenon between all predators and prey. It states that no predator will evolve higher than the prey species to the point that the predator will be 100% successful, 100% of the time. Nor will the prey species evolve higher to the point that it can successfully evade and escape capture 100% of the time. Off the top of my head I cant remember the formal name of this "law".

Because of this naturally occuring, internally balancing phenomena,
Boar dogs and Boar hunters have been evolving to become better than they were thousands of years ago. Just look at some of the purebreeds found today with long histories. For example - The Great Dane. Used for boar hunting etc. I dont know anyone who would use this dog in it's pure form for boar hunting without outcrossing it first. In it's once glorious purebred boar hunting form way back when, it probably was good at hunting boar, but it seems that the purebred form today is obsolete as far as boar hunting goes. evolution beautifully at work.

Eh, da Great Dane was jus an example, no get nuts!

One thing that wont change though is the human ego. For centuries "wild boar hunts" have been marketed as tests of great strength and courage. Ones mark as a man with great skill.Larger than life. Swashbuckling, blade swinging dragon slayers ,champion of champions. With his wiley red eyed, fang snapping ,muscle bound hounds he walks into the depths of hell and pulls out satan himself!

My point is that sometimes over exaggeration of the truth can be enticing others to try boar hunting but the motivation to do so is out of ego. Rubbish all ova, cutting locks cuz de no like walk whea de supposed to like da rest of us. Broke fences whatevah. To me dis shows me only one thing. Someone who will do anything, go anywhere, disrespect anybody and anything( like da forest,) just fo get da catch, da picha, da blood on da shirt, da" how I slayed da dragon story " to tell. And so like da ancient kings and royalty, that belief is perpetuated. Ego.
