$5 microchips for the month of August

This idea was discussed during a series of meetings last year (discussing HCR 60) between the hunting community, the state DLNR/DOFAW and humane society. I know that it can be costly to chip your entire pack so I really hope that alot of people will take this cheap opportunity to microchip all thier dogs. We all know that it can make a difference when trying to get a lost dog backUnfortunately the offer is only good on Oahu. If you would like to see this offer happen on your island as well I would suggest calling the Oahu humane society of your local pound and urge them to make similar partnerships with vets on you island. Throughout August, veterinarians across Oahu are offering low cost microchipping of pets for a flat rate of $5 thanks to a partnership with Hawaiian Humane Society.

A microchip typically costs $25. Participating veterinarians are waiving the cost of the doctor’s visit so that dogs and cats can receive the microchip implant at a substantial discount. Sponsored by the Hawaiian Humane Society, which provides the microchips to islandwide clinics, the August promotion aims to reduce the number of lost pets in the community.

Collars and tags are often lost but microchips provide permanent identification for the pet’s lifetime. Amazing stories of lost pets reunited with their owners years later and many miles from home are possible thanks to the microchip.

Each year the Hawaiian Humane Society helps reunite more than 2,000 Oahu pets with their owners. Registration in the Oahu microchip database is a free service provided by the Hawaiian Humane Society. Pet owners who have moved or changed phone numbers since their animal was first chipped should update their information with the Society by calling 946-2187. A microchip update form is available at www.hawaiianhumane.org or at veterinary clinics participating in Microchip Madness.

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is injected under the skin between the animal’s shoulder blades. Each microchip has an individual code that can be read with a hand-held scanning device.

If you find a stray animal and it is friendly and approachable, and has no visible form of identification, you can go to a nearby veterinarian’s office to scan for a microchip or come to the Humane Society. File a found report with the Humane Society at hawaiianhumane.org immediately so if the owner is looking for him, thry can expedite a reunion.
