how tight should be scope rings be
Hi Everyone, As always thanks for the help. I am kind of new to hunting so I have tons of questions.
Anyone know how tight the screws should be to hold down the scope on a rifle? I figured out from midway usa on youtube that the bases should be 30 inch pounds. But still can't figure out how much the top rings should be. Just ordered my wheeler FAT wrench.

What I do on my rifles is that before you put the screw in you put a little nail pollish on the treads. After that just tighten it untill farily snug

Re: how tight should be scope rings be
I believe its 15 inch pounds for the rings.
What type of rifle, bases and rings you using?
Ring Alignment is also CRUCIAL so make sure your rings are properly aligned as well
They sell tools for this as well as lappers just in case your rings have high spots.
Sorry dont wanna get too technical!
Goodluck with your new rifle and practice all you can, are you planning on reloading your own as well???

Re: how tight should be scope rings be
Remington sps 270 winchester
tally lightweight rings(ring and base is one unit)
pentax gameseeker 4-12 x 40 scope
I might reload. My buddy said I could borrow his stuff. (press, charge loader, and everything)
I don't have much spare time so I might just stick to the store ammo for now.

Re: how tight should be scope rings be
Yea that's why I picked the 700, easy to customize. Seems like you might know this one Cory. Any suggestions are welcome. I did ask my bro who is killer with anything mechanical. He referred me here.
http://www.yetmans.mb.ca/kohler/page3/page3.html#english
He said just figure out what size the bolts are and go from there.
He said go 25 inch pounds for both, and if it still slips (the scope did slip) tighten the rings a little more because they are different screws and can handle more torque. He also said I gotta clean em real good with acetone (rings) I may order a lapping kit. Spending all this money sucks!!!!

Re: how tight should be scope rings be
Got this from a friend
Scope ring screws (Aluminum Rings) 10-15 inch-lbs "MAX"
Scope ring screws (Steel Rings) 15-20 inch-lbs "MAX"
Note' If scope base and ring Screws have less than 5 threads
of engagement they should be replaced with longer ones.
Hope this helps!

Re: how tight should be scope rings be
Sorry fellaz, Just got on computer. I need to reserch your equipment but what Koa Boa went post looks good. Very important though. Before you mount your scope, you need to lap the rings, gotta make sure in fits snug all the way around the scope tube. You can get it done with any gunsmith or we can hook up sometime and do it. Also, Always use tools made for working on guns, I found out the hard way, messed alot of stuff up. Let me know when you going range, I gotta sight a few guns in too. You know how it goes, never satisfied with what I got. I just sporterized an M1 A and put a tac scope on it, floated my 300 win mag and changed the scope, and got a new bolt and scope for my Rem .308.We'll make alot of noise down Koko head, lol.
Aloha,
Cory

Re: how tight should be scope rings be
LOL,Yup. Remember, that was my brothers gun. think he got the gun tuned up pretty good now. I'll do that bottle shot again but I would like to see you guys do ( TRY, LOL) some open sights trick shots, Shoot a penny thrown in the air at about 15 yards, you guys use the pellet gun and I'll use my stick bow. Whatcha say?
KOA BOA, Yeh man, We go hang out, I might go range this Saturday. My shoting buddy was asking me to go with him, this guy knows more about guns than I will ever. Get in touch with me and we'll set it up, or if I do go I'll post on this thread.

Re: how tight should be scope rings be
O.K. Good Idea. Lap 'em. If I do it myself and mess it up, can it be undone? or is it just permanent. I don't want to mess up the rings and toss $45 away for another set.

Re: how tight should be scope rings be
Howzit Timmy,
If I were you Id take Cory up on his offer. Yes, the lapping if done incorrectly can mess up your rings to the point where they are no good, ive seen this happen its easy to get carries away sometimes if you know what I mean. This way you can hook up with Cory have him show you how to use it and what to look for as you lap your rings this way you have the benefit of not having to purchase a lapping kit to only do one set of rings and also some FREE knowledge. Well dunno bout the free part it may cost you some green bottles
If you ever decide on buying more rifles and putting on more scopes etc you can always get a lapping kit then. This way its a win-win situation all around .
Also would like to add to make sure you level your reticle a canted reticle can mess you up the farther downrange you shoot.
Also would like to add a little secret I learned a LONG time ago about scope rings tightness and slippage. When youre done cleaning and prepping your rings and ring screws and you are ready to install your scope: ADD A LITTLE RUBBER CONTACT CEMENT TO YOUR UPPER AND LOWER RINGS, INSTALL YOUR SCOPE INTO BOTTOM RINGS ROUGHLY WHERE YOUR EYE RELIEF SHOULD BE, INSTALL UPPER RINGS AND SNUG DOWN BUT LEAVE LOOSE ENOUGH SO SCOPE CAN ROTATE, CHECK EYE RELIEF AND RETICLE LEVEL AND TORQUE TO SPEC. Dont worry about the excess cement coming out the sides when you tighten down the rings just let it firm up and remove...Just like that, simple!
I have never had a scope slip on me while using this method and ive used it on some pretty heavy recoiling rifles.
Hope this helps and hopefully I can make the range with you guys sometime... My MOTTO: Always learning!!!!!

Re: how tight should be scope rings be
Koa Boa, I got a Winchester Model 70 300 win mag.My buddy Kelly beded it for me, we couldn't get the material here so he had to take a mac flight to Texes and brought back a bunch of goodies. I love that gun, I can reach out and touch stuff from a very long distance with that thing if you know what I mean. Very sweet, very smooth gun. Kinda big for anything I hunt but it's always fun to go to the range and sit next to a guy shooting a 22 or something and torch off a few rounds, lol. I think the gun I like the most that I own is my Remington model 700 .308, incredible gun, great for all around hunting. I've been looking for a 243 for my boys to shoot, They shoot my 308, 30.06, and my M1A carbine but I think for them to hunt with te 243 would be good for them, not too much kick but enough knock down power to get the job done.
Timmy, We can take care of that, it's better that you learn before you do. If need you can also contact a buddy of mine that is a gunsmith here on island, his name is Jam Esteban, he owns E-Tak and builds mostly race guns for competition but is very good with anything guns, he been trying to get my colt model 1911 off me for a while, NO CHANCE BUDDY. You can also contact Matt Ruiz on Kauai, His screen name is Pachuco. I send guns to him often, espatially ones that are collectors items that still fire but I have a hard time finding parts for, exellent gunsmith. If you need his number I can give it to you at the range. It looks to be about 90% that I will be there on Saturday.

Re: how tight should be scope rings be
Hey Cory sounds like some sweet guns!
Yeah a 243 would be cherry for da keikis and maybe even a 7mm-08 get a little better bullet selection for the 7mm over the 243 cal. but its all good getting the bullet to where it needs to go is the main thing.
Aloha!

Re: how tight should be scope rings be
Looks like 'll be there most the afternoon. It's a friends birthday that day and he wanted to shoot for his birthday, not realy a gun guy but wanted to get into it so...... I think I'll have him start with a 30 carbine then an AR in .308 then work up to the 300. looks like I'll be there for a while and may be a costy trip to the range. Anyway, give me a ring Saturday about 12:30 or so to see what's going on. 861-6680
Re: how tight should be scope rings be
If you guys really like learn some stuff about guns, gotta talk to Bradda Munsta (MB). I'll try to get him talk'n. He's the gun guru of all guru's, all you need to know in one Hawaiian package. C'mon Muns, Share the wealth, I know you reading this.

No. I've hunted with black powder in Lani a few times, got a nice buck some years ago. Cool stuff but not for me. I'm more of a rapid fire kinda guy, lol. I'm sure if I was exposed to it more and learned a bit more about it I'd get hooked.
Right from the horses hoof
Just got the Wheeler FAT Wrench in the mail. It has a card with torque specifications. It says:
Base screws 30
ring screws aluminum 10-15
Windage screws 30-40
Ring screws steel 15-20
If the screw has less than six threads of engagement, limit torque to 15
all in inch pounds
I ordered a vise as well. ya all are welcome to come by ant tighten your stuff with the wrench. Just message me.
Looks like I am working Saturday so I am going to skip the range. Probably could come for an hour or so but you know how it goes, usually takes longer than that.
