Office of Science
The Office of Science is a component of the United States Department of Energy (DOE). It manages fundamental research programs in basic energy sciences, biological and environmental sciences, and computational science, and it operates 10 national laboratories.[1] The office is the predominant U.S. federal government sponsor for research in the physical sciences, particularly in physics and related fields, and an important source of funding for fields including computer sciences, mathematics, environmental sciences, materials science, nanotechnology, and engineering.[2] One of its major activities is providing support for construction and operation of large scientific user facilities that are made available for use by external researchers.[2]
The 10 Office of Science national laboratories are: Ames Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility.[1]
