Re: Customized site for men & women
But... presuming you mean eating meals separately (instead of consuming smaller/weaker humans :-) ) - in VERY Orthodox communities (such as Hassidim or Chabad) IN GROUP SETTINGS, it is still the custom for men to eat (and worship) separately from women. The reason is that a man who comes in contact with a menstruating woman (even accidentally) is considered ritually unclean if one accepts a strict interpretation of the law; being "unclean" has nothing to do with personal hygiene, but with being able to participate in certain activities in a worship service. Since it would also, however, be impolite (and probably a violation of the family purity law - I think) to ASK a woman if she is menstruating, they simply err on the side of caution and separate the genders in a group setting. Children of either sex can eat with either gender in most communities until they reach the age of bar/bat mitzvah; children aren't worried about being "unclean" because they don't participate in services until they become bar mitzvah (and girls/women don't generally participate in services at all in such communities, except as congregants/spectators).
