Another Hog Down
I had a feelin I should go hunting after work today. I checked the spot the other day and saw good sign so I figured with some aproaching storm fronts in the forecast it's a good time to go, so after breaking the news to the Ole Lady that I wouldn't be meeting her to go shopping, I headed up the mountain.
I got to the area a little early for an evening hunt so I killed some time eating something so I wouldn't get hungry sitting in the stand... I hate that. I still thought I was a little early but geared up and went up the trail.
Something felt different, I kept stopping to smell the air, listen and look around. I was right, about 20 yds from the treestand I noticed a lot of very fresh tracks, then I heard pigs walking to the left of me coming across the trail. I tried to sneak closer to make an attempt at getting to the treestand. Too late they are getting too close! I saw two smaller pigs that I thought were going to bust me for sure but I managed to sneak up hill of them before they crossed my trail. There was more! they just kept coming, two, three, four!, five!! and they were starting to get bigger. At that point I knocked an arrow and got ready. They were all headed straight for me so I couldn't get a shot. Just then I saw out of the corner of my eye a large hog through the trees about 25 yds away up hill of me and to my right. It wasn't an ideal shot to take, a little far for my comfort zone with trad gear, pig was quartering toward me, and I had to thread it through some big downed trees. I figured I would get busted for sure and most likely not get a shot at all if I didn't go for it, so I drew back my 55# Howatt Mamba and let the Snuffer tipped 650 grain arrow do it's thing... Smack!! looked like a good shot, it was a beautifull sight the way it went between the tree limbs and into the pig. What a thrill shooting from the ground! I ran for the treestand and climbed up to get a better view of where the hog ran, and to get out of the way of all the other hogs scattering around. I saw the pig run off up the hill and into some thicker cover. While I waited in the stand a little while and made a couple phone calls, I could hear more pigs coming down the trail. You gotta be kidding me! I counted seven more hogs including a nice Boar strolled right across the trail below me. After they all cleared out I went down, found my bloody arrow and tracked down the harvest.
What a day! I have never seen so many wild pigs in one spot, and I ended up with a nice big good eating sow.
