Mainland Elk hunting info
Aloha all,
I have a life long dream of bow hunting Elk in the mainland. I'm looking for any information anyone can provide on places to hunt Elk. It would need to be a location that has public hunting and over the counter tags.
My thoughts are to put together a Hawaii hunting party and travel there as a group work as a team and kill some mainland critters!!! For my part it will take some planning/saving so I'm probably looking at next Elk season.
If you have any info or are interested in joining the hunt please let me know, all ideas are welcome!

RE: Mainland Elk
I'm not set on any one location and I really don't know that much about Elk hunting areas. I know many states have a lottery only system and others have over the counter tags available. I want a state that offers over the counter so I know I'll be able to hunt and can plan accordingly. My budget isn't set yet, because I don't know how much tags run. Of the places you have friends, they are all good with me. I'd like New Mexico or Idaho but if it's open hunting elsewhere I'm good for anything.
Thanks,
Hunter Steve

mainland elk hunt
Hunter Steve,
I have Mule deer hunted in Colorado, and I have friends who Elk hunt in Colorado every year. Most of the hunting land in CO is public. If you are talking hunting with bow, I believe that all tags are purchased over-the-counter in CO. For gun hunts, most is done by draw. If you are talking about next year, I can put you together with some contacts. I probably will hunt there next fall. Bow hunting in CO usually runs from August 30-Sept 28th. Colorado's DNR Website is a great resource. Since you are traveling to the mainland, don't discount bow for mule deer. Spotting and stalking for mulies is the best hunting that I have ever done.
Warmest Aloha,
John

Mainland Elk hunting info
Braddah John,
thanks for the info, I checked out the Colorado DNR website and it does have lots of good info. I'm looking into that as my primary hunting site. If you have any info on the herds and locations that are better then any others that'd be great. The OTC archery license is $530.00 which is much less then many other places.
Thanks,
Hunter Steve

Utah Elk
Utah has over the counter tags and lots of open public land. Utah archery tags offer a choice of bull or cow but some areas are limited to spike bulls and cows only. I will be there next week for archery elk and mule deer! The area I hunt has a lot of elk, but it is a spike and cow only are so I just have to enjoy seeing the huge bulls as I cannot shoot them. Tag prices are similar to Colorado.
