That article hyped up the herd size a lot more than the story I've been hearing through the grapevine. Maybe just a political maneuver to spark action. I heard there were one, possibly two, small isolated populations in potentially a large area of thick brush private land surrounded by pastures. Lots of area for them to hide. From an economic and ecological perspective, this is a disaster in the making and the majority would benefit greatly from the herd's eradication ASAP while it's still possible to do so. And if that fails, hunting will be the only feasible management option. But with ag losses, farmers are tempted to grant expensive hunting leases just to stay afloat.

I hope the population of Axis Deer increases on the Big Island, so with all the other Game Mamals throughout the Sate, including Chickens.There might be some day that we will need these Animals as a sustainable food source.There are way more White Tail Deer in bigger Farm area's throughout the United States that Farmer's have learned how to deal with.The disaster was when the first white man came and settled here in the Islands.I am a white man ,so I have the right to say that.The Ecosystem in this State will never be able to recover from what it has sustained from the encroaching population and introduced invasive species that is taken over the forest.There are worse things then Game Mamals that is a Ecological Disaster.Things that are not a food source. Things that will not be used for sustainability for Humans.When they are sucessful getting rid of all the non Food source Invasive Species.Then and Maybe then will they be able to convince me that they are able to save our Ecosystem.So, till then,just leave the Game Mammals alone.

funny how the ranchers and the cattlemans association want to eradicate axis deer from big island because they are "invasive species". what do they think cattle are? there are hundreds of wild cattle in the forests doing way more damage than any deer. also, deer are nothing compared to pigs. i just hope the deer are in thick areas that allow them to multiply without being seen. and that the deer numbers are already significant. hopefully there are boatloads more on the way now! they swim good so would be easy to dump em in the valleys between pololuu and waipio. in 10 yrs i hope we have huntable numbers. axis herd will grow 700% in 10 yrs.

dat sounds gud guys should just not kill em 4 now so we let dem numbers grow fu#k da cattle deer taste way better haha
