Anglesea River Fish Kill AGAIN!!!
After the previous fish kill which occurred a few weeks ago we have tried hard to make the government departments listen to our concerns. We have been advised that meetings will take place, and fisheries are doing their best to help facilitate action to resolve the problem.
The question is now, not so much as to when these departments will make a decision but can the Anglesea River afford to wait on that decision.
The answer is purely and simply "NO" the river doesn't have any time left to wait on Government departments to initially make a decision to make a decision to take a decision.
Not Good!
The Anglesea River is acknowledged from a Ecological point of View as Being one of the premium Bream Nursery areas along the west coast of Victoria as well as containing a diverse range of fish species which are vitally important to overall health of the system and the Eco system in general. Bream, Mullet, Salmon Tupong and Short-finned Eels are the main predator species in the system where as gudgeon, hardyhead and galaxias spp are the other resident species but also vitally important to the river's food chain.
The majority of fish that died in the first fish Kill were of the smaller species, where as the subsequent kill has resulted in fish of the Predator species now dying.
Not only has this the Potential to be an Environmental Disaster it is also impacting on Tourism in the Township and causing immense concern among locals and holidaymakers as well as local businesses.
With the Summer Holidays pending the ongoing fallout from this could be substantial not only for the river's health but the township in general.
ACTION is required now, not in a week's time or a month's time, the issue has now reached a critical point. It is up to the government and its appropriate departments to act expedientially and fully investigate the causes and find a solution to this problem NOW.
It is interesting that our Local Member for Parliament Mr Michael Crutchfield just recently announced that Government would be putting substantial monies into a significant funding package for river health initiatives in 2010/11. He claims this illustrates the Government’s strong progress in managing and improving the state’s river systems and reflects the ongoing commitment from Catchment Management Authorities and community partners. After seeing this announcement one would have thought that Mr. Crutchfield would have taken a interest in this issue, however he has failed to respond to emails regarding this matter even though the Anglesea River is on the edge of his Electorate.
