HONOLULU (AP) — The Army plans to open part of Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island to hunters over the next two weekends to control wild goat and sheep populations there.

Licensed hunters will be allowed in beginning at 5 a.m. Friday. Hunters checking in at the Huluhulu station on the east side and Kilohana station on the west side will receive maps, travel routes and information about hunting areas.

The hunting is part of the Army's $4 million-a-year conservation program to protect endangered plants and animals at Pohakuloa. The animals, which were introduced to Hawaii about 200 years ago, dig up native plants and destroy habitats needed by endangered birds and other species.

The Army is also installing fences around 45,000 acres of Pohakuloa to keep out goats and sheep.
